Dr. Marian Glancy Appointed to Chief Academic Officer

Dr. Marian GlancyDr. Marian Glancy, an educator and leader who helped Antioch University Midwest’s (AUM) School of Education achieve prestigious accreditation, was named Chief Academic Officer at the institution on July 1. Glancy, who has served at AUM as a core faculty member for more than a decade, and as director of the School of Education, is a member of AUM’s executive team.

“Dr. Glancy has helped countless students achieve their academic, civic, and personal goals through her mentorship, tutelage, and by sharing strategies to excel,” said Dr. Karen Schuster Webb, president of Antioch University Midwest. “As Chief Academic Officer, she will continue that tradition while providing her expertise, leadership and vision to our university. “

Glancy began her core faculty position at AUM in 2004, later becoming chair of adolescent young adult education and middle childhood education departments from 2005-2011. In 2011, she was selected as the School of Education’s director. In addition to serving on the AUM executive team, and has consistently shared her expertise through substantial committee work and outreach on behalf of Antioch University. Among her accomplishments, Glancy successfully led the extraordinary team effort that enhanced the School of Education’s national reputation through CAEP (Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation) accreditation.

Prior to her appointment at AUM, Glancy was a research fellow at the Kettering Foundation and served as a faculty member and administrator at Jewel and Esk Valley College in Edinburgh, Scotland. She received a PhD in Educational Leadership and a Master’s of Science in Education from the University of Dayton. Her Bachelor’s of Education degree is from Dunfermline College in Scotland.

Yellow Springs, Ohio – Alan (Al) Guskin, PhD, former Antioch University chancellor, president emeritus, founder of the university’s PhD in Leadership & Change program, and a change agent who inspired the Peace Corps and helped found AmeriCorps VISTA, will culminate his 30-year career at an evening of celebration and reflection on Wednesday, July 29 at AUM’s PNC Auditorium at 900 Dayton Street in Yellow Springs, Ohio. The presentation portion of the event, during which Guskin will discuss Looking Back and Going Forward: The Creation of the PhD Program in Leadership and Change – Why, How and What Comes Next, begins at 7 pm. A reception to honor Guskin’s contributions to higher education and social justice will be held from 8 to 9 pm; both are free to attend and open to the public.

Al GuskinGuskin, who has worked for more three decades as a teacher, leader, administrator, organizational change consultant, and tireless advocate for social justice, was a driving force in the creation of the PhD in Leadership and Change program at Antioch University, where he currently holds the title of Distinguished University Professor of Higher Education Change. His contributions to the program have helped countless individuals accomplish their goals through education and advocacy. His specialties include examining the role of leadership, power, conflict and change in educational organizations, and the transformation of higher education.

In the world of higher education, many factors contribute to the quality and reputation of an institution. New academic concentrations in healthcare disciplines, bachelor’s completion, master’s and certificate programs at Antioch University Midwest will help prepare new or established professionals for the next steps in their careers. Students may now focus their degrees or professional development studies on Healthcare Administration, Integrative Health Studies, Meaningful Conversations in Health and Healing and Navigating Healthcare Conflict.

Whether helping patients work through the overwhelming intricacies of their care or employing the entrepreneurial and care-focused skills needed to manage a medical practice, all of AUMs healthcare programs center on impacting the lives of others in positive ways.

Programs to Meet Every Need

The Bachelor’s completion programs in Health and Wellness and in Management with a concentration in Healthcare Administration are designed for healthcare workers, providers and professionals in affiliated businesses such as physicians’ offices, hospitals, labs, outpatient surgery centers, long-term care facilities, insurance and managed-care companies. They produce healthcare administrators with solid conceptual understanding of the critical issues and trends in the healthcare industry as well as the business savvy and leadership skills needed to oversee a successful office or practice. Noah Adams to Speak at AUM Commencement

National Public Radio Correspondent Noah Adams to Keynote Antioch University Midwest Commencement Ceremonies

Noah AdamsNoah Adams, award-winning journalist, bestselling author and contributing correspondent for National Public Radio’s national desk, will share remarks with Antioch University Midwest’s (AUM) 2015 graduating class at 2 pm on Sunday, May 3, at Clark State Community College Performing Arts Center’s Kuss Auditorium, 300 South Fountain Avenue, Springfield, Ohio. A resident of Yellow Springs, who travels extensively for assignments, Adams brings a reporter’s perspective to a class of students focused on social justice causes in the United States and beyond.

“I love to tell stories that compare the Miami Valley to Silicon Valley, a century apart.  And to wonder aloud about what comes next and how fast,” Adams said.

Adams is the long-time co-host of NPR’s All Things Considered and has more than three decades of broadcast journalism experience. As a contributing correspondent for NPR’s National Desk since 2003, he focuses on topics ranging from on the low-wage workforce and farm issues, to the Hurricane Katrina aftermath.

“As the newest AUM graduates complete their degrees, they will continue to impact their communities locally and globally,” said Dr. Karen Schuster Webb, president of Antioch University Midwest. “What better way to inspire applying new perspectives and ever-expanding world views than to hear from someone with truly unique experiences.”

Over the years Adams has often reported from overseas: he covered the Christmas Eve uprising against the Ceasescu government in Romania, and his work from Serbia was honored by the Overseas Press Club in 1994. His writing and narration of the documentary Father Cares: The Last of Jonestown, earned Adams a Prix Italia, the Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Award and the Major Armstrong Award.

Adams’ work has been published extensively and includes a collection of essays from Good Evening, entitled Saint Croix Notes: River Morning, Radio Nights (W.W. Norton, 1990; Noah Adams on All Things Considered: A Radio Journal (W.W. Norton, 1992); Piano Lessons: Music, Love and True Adventures (Delacore, 1996); Far Appalachia: Following the New River North (Delacore, 2000); and The Flyers: in Search of Wilbur and Orville Wright (Crown, 2004). Most recently Adams co-wrote This is NPR: The First Forty Years (Chronicle Books, 2010).

Antioch Midwest Partners Host Education Career Fair

Antioch University Midwest Partners with Six Colleges and Universities to Host Education Career Fair on March 31

Employers and Job Seekers Invited to Attend

In partnership with six colleges and universities in southwest Ohio and northern Kentucky, Antioch University Midwest (AUM) invites students and employers in the region to attend the 2015 Southwest Ohio/Northern Kentucky Education Career Fair on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at the Cintas Center at Xavier University, 3800 Victory Parkway in Cincinnati. Orientation begins at 8:45 am, and sessions, networking opportunities and interviews will take place throughout the event, which ends at 5 pm.

“This event is a great opportunity for education and counseling students to connect with potential employers while also being a great way for school districts and area agencies to meet new candidates, and we hope even meet their next new hire,” said Sonya Fultz, teaching faculty and chair of AUM’s adolescent to young adult and middle childhood education programs. “Our goal is to provide our students and graduates with career development opportunities to help them find the perfect match for their skills and talents.”

Participating schools include AUM, Mount St. Joseph University, Northern Kentucky University, Wilmington College, the University of Cincinnati, and Xavier University.  Students and alumni of the sponsoring educational organizations are invited to attend, and represent a variety of majors including early childhood education, elementary education, middle childhood education, secondary education, Montessori education, special education, school counseling, community counseling and educational administration. Students may meet with more than 50 individual schools including Cincinnati Public Schools, Saint Xavier High School, and the Academy for Urban School Leadership. A full list of participating organizations is available online. Registration is still open for additional school districts to join.

The fair’s agenda offers a networking session for recruiters and teaching/counseling candidates to meet informally, and schedule afternoon interviews. It regularly draws more than 400 interested candidates, making this event a prime opportunity for businesses to share information about anticipated openings, gather resumes, and screen a number of qualified candidates from six colleges and universities in one day. Due to the popularity of this event, employers are encouraged to maximize the afternoon interviewing session by bringing additional recruiters to interview multiple candidates during each interview slot.

Students and alumni seeking full time employment are welcome, and no registration is required. The event is free, and students are requested to bring a student ID and multiple copies of their resumes. Antioch University Midwest to Host Ohio Voices for Learning Statewide Initiative Parents as Partners in the Life of School

Reggio Emilia Approach Expert and Esteemed Educator Lella Gandini to be Keynote Speaker

Antioch University Midwest (AUM) and its School of Education will host a statewide education conference focused on parents as partners in the life of school. The Ohio Voices for Learning: A Reggio Inspired Forum (OVL) full-day conference will take place Saturday, March 7 and will feature Lella Gandini, a consultant in early childhood education and an expert in the Reggio Emilia Approach to teaching.

OVL is a dynamic professional development network of more than 500 educators dedicated to promoting the Reggio Emilia Approach (REA) through the exchange of information, ideas and shared experiences illustrating how aspects of the instructional approach are implemented in Ohio classrooms. The Reggio Emilia Approach focuses on seeing children as active contributors to their education – rather than the target of instruction – and is grounded in several key principles including the belief that children are active protagonists of their growth and development process; learning is a process of individual and group construction; and the teaching environment is organized to provoke and support learning.

AUM is a statewide leader in teaching the REA and its School of Education’s Early Childhood program is recognized by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), making the campus an excellent launchpad for this initiative, which coincides with the Ohio Department of Education’s Step up to Quality (SUTQ) requirement for preschool programs and teacher professional development.

“Recognizing parents as participants in a child’s education is crucial to the overall health of an education system and is symbiotic with the key principles we teach students and continuing educators,” said Julie Biddle PhD, core faculty, chair of AUM’s early childhood education program, and co-chair of OVL. “I am excited to welcome such an esteemed colleague as Lella Gandini to be part of an event that will unite students, teachers, parents and families in the shared goal of quality education.”

Lella Gandini, EdD is an educator, consultant and a Reggio Children United States Liaison for the Dissemination of the Reggio Emilia Approach. She serves as Associate Editor of Innovations in Early Education: The International Reggio Exchange. She is co-editor and co-author of The Hundred Languages of Children: The Reggio Emilia Approach to Early Childhood Education; Beautiful Stuff: Learning with Found Materials; Bambini: The Italian Approach to Infant/Toddler Care; In the Spirit of the Studio: Learning from the Atelier of Reggio Emilia; Insights and Inspirations from Reggio Emilia: Stories of Children and Teachers from North America. In addition to Gandini’s remarks, the conference also includes small group conversations about “strengths, challenges and opportunities of partnering with parents,” with participation from Gandini.

Antioch University Midwest Announces Several New Scholarships

Awards Help New Students Meet Tuition Costs and Realize Their Educational Dreams

Antioch University Midwest (AUM) proudly announces several new scholarship opportunities for new students. These timely additions to AUM’s financial aid platform – the Phi Theta Kappa and Kappa Beta Delta Scholarships, the First Year Graduate Scholarship, and the Alumni Scholarship for Social Justice –make it easier for new undergraduate, graduate and transfer students to meet tuition costs, and realize their educational dreams.

“At Antioch University, we understand the financial commitment students have to make to be able to return to school,” said Ronald Brown, Vice Chancellor of Enrollment Management.  “We want to provide our students with as many opportunities as possible for financial aid.”

First – good news for new transfer students. The Phi Theta Kappa and Kappa Beta Delta Scholarships are for any eligible new transfer student who is a United States citizen, and a member in good standing of either honor society. Neither award can be coupled with any other AUM scholarship. A limited number of $4,000 scholarships are available, on a first-come, first-eligible basis, and will be disbursed to the student over a two-year period.

To qualify, an applicant must be admitted to AUM by June 1 for fall semester 2015 as a full-time candidate. They must have completed a minimum of 60 hours/90 quarter hours, post and maintain a 3.5 GPA, and hold no previously earned bachelor degree(s). Online students are not eligible.

Additionally, applicants must submit an essay about the role Phi Theta Kappa or Kappa Beta Delta played in their educational experience, and a letter of recommendation from their respective society. Deadline is June 1.

Next, AUM’s First Year Graduate Scholarship is open to new master’s degree candidates enrolled in specific programs – Individualized Master of Arts, Master of Arts in Conflict Analysis and Resolution, or Master of Arts in Management and Change Leadership. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 undergraduate GPA. Only new graduate students are eligible; transfer and previously enrolled students do not qualify for the award.

Recipients will receive a one-third discount on the tuition cost of a single course for each of their first two semesters. Traditional enrollment fees will also be waived. The scholarships will be awarded on a first-come, first-eligible basis while funds are available.

Last, the competitive Alumni Scholarship for Social Justice, funded and awarded by members of the Antioch University Midwest Alumni Association, will provide up to $1,500 for one new student’s first semester. Any full-time or part-time undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing may apply.

Each applicant must submit an essay on how social justice applies to them personally and professionally. The top five entries will be chosen by a review panel. AUM alumni will vote for the winner.

Antioch University Midwest to Host Yellow Springs Art History Night

Event is partnership with Yellow Springs Arts Council and Yellow Springs Historical Society

Antioch University Midwest (AUM) will host a reception and open an exciting art exhibit celebrating Yellow Springs’ unique heritage on Thursday, January 29, 2015, from 6 to 9 pm on campus at 900 Dayton Road in Yellow Springs. The reception will feature local history talks, Yellow Springs artists and refreshments.

The free event, entitled, “Homegrown Art: A Yellow Springs Art History Night,” will feature the Yellow Springs Arts Council’s Permanent Collection, which includes more than 139 artworks which are displayed year round in the hallways of Antioch University Midwest. In addition, “Bookplates and Beyond: Original Artwork from the Antioch Publishing Company,” a special exhibit of the Yellow Springs Historical Society, will be on display in the Art Alcove. The exhibit will run from January 5th   through January 31st, and is open to the general public.

Tours of the two collections will be available until 7 pm, followed by local art history talks. Scheduled speakers include local artists Deb Henderson, Jon Hudson, Dennie Eagleson, Nancy Howell-Koehler, and Dave Neuhardt of the Yellow Springs Historical Society. During an open mic session audience members will have the opportunity to contribute their personal memories of artists and events in Yellow Springs art history.

“We are very proud to partner with the Yellow Springs Arts Council and Yellow Springs Historical Society to make these extraordinary art collections available for everyone to enjoy,” said Kelly Leff, marketing manager at Antioch University Midwest. They are an important part of our artistic heritage.”

The Yellow Springs Arts Council Permanent Collection, a historic collection of artworks by local artists, along with the Yellow Springs Historical Society’s special exhibit can be viewed weekdays and Saturday during normal business hours in the halls of Antioch University Midwest.
